Our Story: A Legacy of Hard Work and Family

In 1991, my father, Sam, founded Sam’s Mobile Detailing with nothing but a dream, a relentless work ethic, and a deep love for his family. As a hardworking, blue-collar immigrant, he knew that success wasn’t handed out—it was earned. He built his business from the ground up, going door to door as a mobile detailer, treating every client like family and every vehicle like it was his own.

His dedication didn’t go unnoticed. Over time, he earned the trust of a commercial property management company, which invited him to take over the onsite detailing shop here at The Plaza. It was a turning point, and with great pride, he renamed the business Sam’s Detailing, cementing his reputation as the go-to detailer in town.

He was known as San Diego Scooter Sam, for his innovative use of a motorized scooter to get from his shop to his clients to offer San Diego's first and (still to this day) only pick up and drop off detailing service.

By 2011, his small operation had grown into an essential amenity for The Plaza, a bustling commercial business complex. To reflect that growth, he rebranded once again—Plaza Detail was born. But through every name change and expansion, one thing remained constant: his commitment to quality, hard work, and treating customers like family.

My name is Justin and I am Sam's second son. My brothers and I grew up in that shop. After school, we’d head straight there—not just to spend time with Dad but to learn the trade, sweep floors, and understand firsthand how much effort it takes to make an honest dollar. As we got older, we earned the chance to work alongside him, gaining not just technical skills but life lessons in discipline, integrity, and perseverance.

Life took us in different directions, and for a time, I pursued my own career. But when my father’s health declined, I stepped in to help him run the shop. Eventually, he passed away, leaving me with more than just a business—he left me a legacy to uphold.

Today, I carry that legacy forward, blending my father’s old-school work ethic with modern technology, state-of-the-art equipment, and a relentless drive for excellence. At Plaza Detail, we don’t just clean cars—we restore pride, protect investments, and provide the highest level of care in San Diego.

A Letter From Our Late Founder Sam

---This letter was written in the Spring of 2019. Sam has since passed on but his heart beats in each car that we service.---

Dear my beloved clients and friends,

I believe that the only place where hard work comes before success is in the dictionary. I have worked my hardest for 20 years, starting this business from nothing and growing it in to something incredible. I love the friends I have made along the way and the relationships with my clients mean everything to me. In this business, without trust there is nothing, and in gaining that trust from the professionals of UTC area, I have grown to love it like a home.

Now I am partnering with my son, Justin and I have made sure that he understands the value of hard work, honesty and relationships. I am so excited to see him putting his mind in to improving this business on a technological level and I am happy to know that my business that I have worked so hard to grow will remain for years to come as a family ran business.

Plaza Detail isn’t just a business to me—it’s a family heirloom. It's the last piece of my father that I hold so dearly to my heart. It's where I grew up, and its where I will remain until I pass the torch along to my daughter, Huxley. I love to be here and feel my fathers presence and I love to support the community in his honor. I truly am most at peace when I am at work transforming cars and making peoples days brighter. It brings me great pleasure and pride to see the smiles on my customers faces when they come back to a wonderful feeling, smelling and looking car! I understand now why my father was always so happy when he came home to greet our family with big hugs, kisses gifts.
